MOPAR CSBK CANADIAN HARLEY-DAVIDSON® XR1200® CUP SERIES – ROUND TWO
Action Remains Heated in the Canadian Harley-Davidson® XR1200® Cup Series
CONCORD, Ontario (July 10, 2012) – Autodrome St-Eustache in Saint-Eustache, Quebec
Round two of the Canadian Harley-Davidson® XR1200® Cup Series took place on Sunday, July 8, as part of the Mopar CSBK National Road Race Championship at the Autodrome St-Eustache in Saint-Eustache, Quebec.
MotoSport Plus of Kingston rider, Steve Crevier, continued to dominate the action. Starting off by besting the track record he set last season. Crevier used the Saturday afternoon qualifying session to his advantage, posting a 49.827-second lap of Autodrome St-Eustache on his third lap, beating the mark he set last year by 0.353. Behind him, four more Harley-Davidson® XR1200® motorcycle racers were within a second of the cagey veteran.
Ruthless Racing Inc. teammates, J.R. MacRae and Darren James, qualified as the second and third fastest. MacRae had been neck and neck with Crevier all weekend, but James used his final qualifying lap on the tight St-Eustache race track to move up several positions and grab the third fastest time. Sharing the best times were Mackie Harley-Davidson® rider, Michael Taylor and Harley-Davidson® de L’Outaouais rider, Elie Daccache.
With the pole position honour, Crevier again earned the Tactical Products Canada Luminox watch and gift pack, valued at over $700.
Sunday morning’s warm-up session heated up along with the day and was a good predictor for how the race would unfold. Ruthless Racing Inc. racer, J.R. MacRae again chased Crevier with a host of riders looking to challenge. Most impressive was the improvement of Clare’s Harley-Davidson® of Niagara rider, Don Taylor, dropping another second from his lap times and joining the top six riders with a 51.955-second lap.
When the start lights flashed, MacRae jumped into the early lead with Crevier in hot pursuit, while teammate Darren James slid into third position just ahead of Mackie Harley-Davidson® rider, Michael Taylor, and Harley- Davidson® de L’Outaouais rider, Elie Daccache. MacRae’s great start was in vain though. When the youngster lost the front end transitioning through the chicane, MacRae slid off the track and out of contention, leaving Crevier all alone at the front of the pack. Darren James had his hands full with Michael Taylor, who managed to slip by on lap four, setting up a battle that would go well into the late stages of the race. James was making good progress chasing down the five-time superbike champion, until a back marker spoiled the effort, relegating James to the final step of the podium. Daccache was also making steady progress until he too lost the front end of his XR1200® race bike, sliding into the straw bales and ending his challenge. Daccache managed to remount and still scored some valuable points for his effort.
Crevier again took the checkered flag, with Michael Taylor in second and James in third.
Seven-time Canadian dirt track champion, Don Taylor, got a well-earned fourth place and continues to improve. Atlantic Harley-Davidson® Retailers-sponsored Blaise Fougere finished in fifth, with journalist, Costa Mouzouris in sixth on the Deeley Harley-Davidson® Canada media bike. Eric Trudel, riding for Becancour Harley-Davidson®, placed seventh, with Rocky’s Harley-Davidson® and Kitchener Harley-Davidson®-backed “Gump” Harrison in eighth. Newcastle, Ontario, rider, Elie Daccache, got back into the race with a ninth place finish.
After the race, when asked about the riders behind him closing in on him, Crevier commented: “I was all worried about the draft on the back straight because that is so important here,” adding, “I was making some little mistakes, I was riding faster this morning in the practice than I did in the race, so I just had to settle down and get into a little groove, to win this for MotoSport Plus of Kingston and my team.”
The next race in the series takes place on July 21 and 22 at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. For further details and results of the Canadian Harley-Davidson® XR1200® Cup Series visit www.csbk.ca.
